Coaching: Definition of Coaching

Hi,

With the rising popularity of Coaching in both Hong Kong and China, there seem to be more confusions about this term.

There are 2 major confusions about Coaching:

1. People uses the term "coaching" interchangely with other terms like, "counselling", "training", "personal training", "mentoring", "personal instructing", "guiding", etc.

If they are the same thing, why a new term and a new form of skill?

2. People adds knowledge and skills from other areas to coaching, like active listening, NLP, enneagram, leadership, persoanl development etc. If coaching is a different skill from all others, it should have its own skillset.

If only one definition is allowed, I will define coaching as:

"Facilitating others to identify blindspots in thinking through dialogue"

To clarify:

1. Coaching is NOT "counselling", "training", "personal training", "mentoring", "personal instructing", "guiding", etc. Coaching is NOT better than the above. They are just different.

2. Active Listening, NLP, enneagram, etc can help a coach to coach, but they are not Coaching itself. You do not need to know any of the above to coach effectively. Knowing the above does not make you knowing how to coach.

3. Coaching can result in better leadership and personal development due to the discovery of blindspots. But Coaching is not Leadership or Personal Development.

4. If one wants to learn coaching, the only 2 things need to learn is "Dialogue" and the "Mechanism of Blindspots".

Learning from Life #86 - #90

Hi,

Hope you find another 5 of my Learning from Life enjoyable:

86. We really love someone if we do not expect anything from him/her!

87. If you think you can help anyone, you are the one who need help most.

88. If you want help, ask!

89. We focus on what we can't control. This gives us sadness, worry and fear!

90. Life is much easier when you ignore the meaningless.

Talking Behind the Mirror

Hi,

Talking is like a mirror. It reflects back to ourselves.

If we really observe, we can learn a lot from the mirror.

But if we talk behind the mirror, there is less stress but we learn nothing!

The Real Secret of Creativity

Hi,

I am conducting the Creativity Trip right now in Zhong Shan. There are around 20 participants from Hong Kong and several from Zhong Shan joining us.

As promised, we are not learning common creativity skills here.

If real creativity ideas are uncommon ideas, how can we get something uncommon from something common?!

But the key point of the workshop is not about skills. Skill is just the "Body" of creativity. Without "Mind", there is no real creativity.

What is the "Mind" of the creative skills?

Intelligence!

A creative person is not a person with skills. Don't you find many people who had learned all those creativity skills but still not being creative! They lack the "Mind" of creativity.

An intelligent person is creative.

But how can we make ourselves more intelligent?

Simple, by accumulating more Intelligence!

Intelligence is not Information. When someone can't tell you how many cm is 1 mile, but he does knows 1 mile = 1,760 yard,1 yard = 3 feet, 1 metre = 3.28 feet, 1 metre = 100 cm, then he has a lot of Information but not enough Intelligence!

Acumulating Intelligence is the finding of Links within Information.

Start your accumulation today for a "Creative You" tomorrow!

Fight or Flight Instinct

Hi,

I talked about human instinct in our NLP Program. Why?

1. We are animal, we have instinct. This is the most powerful drive. This Fight or Flight instinct keeps us alive. Accepting this fact makes us evolving beyond it. Ignoring it keeps us controlled by it.

2. What makes us human, not just an animal? We are controlling our instinct or our instinct is controlling us.

Do a simple game on yourself. Observe yourself - are we always fight or flight when something happens?

If your answer is "yes", then you are controlled by your instinct!

When we see everything happening is "threatening", then we automatically go into the fight or flight instinct. We attack, physically or verbally (督), or we ignore, escape, retreat, side-slip (縮).

So, when we find ourselves always in the 督 and 縮 cycles, we are just an animal. Human has a much broader spectrum of responses!

Think, and we can have much more responses than just the 2 reactions!

Hypnosis: Hypnosis is about Changes Part 6

Hi,

This is the Part 6, the final part of the article series of "Hypnosis is about Changes".

To recap what we had discussed in the last 5 parts:

Source > Beliefs > Problems/Factors > Symptoms

This model reflects 5 locations we hypnotherapists can work on with our clients. This enhances our flexibility. But the picture is not yet completed. Here is the 6th element.

Source > Beliefs > Problems/Factors > Symptoms > Results

Clients come to you sometimes due to the Symptoms, and sometimes due to the Results. They might be asking for help on their red face when meeting the opposite sexes, or they might be requesting for help in their difficulties in having a boy/girl friend. The former is the Symptoms while the latter is the Results.

We can help the client to change the results without changing any of the previous 5 elements. He can still having red face when meeting girls, but he can be able to talk with them even with a red face.

When we can't do anything with all the 5 other elements due to whatever reasons, we can add/remove/change some other behaviours to achieve an alternative but improved result. We can do this by Hypnotic Suggestions, Inner Guidance, Inner Mediation or Ego States Therapy. The original problem still exists, but the client gets a better result.

When I was dealing with very old-aged clients, or when the pain from the Source was too great for him/her to touch on his/her Source, Beliefs, Problems, or the Source and/or the Belief was too repressed that we can uncover nothing, I will just handle his/her Results.

This is the final part of this series, and I hope you can get a fuller picture on hypnotherapeautic intervention.

I plan to start another series on blind-spots. Hope you can find it useful too.

Zen & Logic- My Points of View

Hi,

One of our NLP classmates raised a discuusion in Zen and Logic.

I know quite nothing about Zen but exploration always yields some learning. Here is my exploration.

鈴木大拙 is absolutely right that Zen is not based on Logic and Zen practitioners can't 悟 using Logic. This is right if we are talking about Classical Logic, which originated from ancient India, China and Greece. But Zen and Logic can co-exist if we are considering Non-Classical Logic, which started in the 60's - 70's.

I guess that 鈴木大拙 was referring to the Classical Logic as he died in 1966.

As Zen is about "whole", the 二元模式 (eg. true or false) of the Classical Logic limits its usefulness in applying Zen. However, many schools of the Non Classical Logic do not insist the 二元模式.

From a systemic point of view on logic, the world (or universe) consists of multiple causes and effects. Many causes might lead to many effects. We can't see the "whole" because we limit ourselves to one single or only several causes and effects.

If you read really through 鈴木大拙's writings, his idea of 頓悟 is that understanding starts in Subconscious Mind and then gets into the Conscious Mind. When the understanding gets into the Conscious Mind, we get a sudden thorough understanding - 頓悟. Before that, we understand nothing because it is in the Subconscious. This is a great modern interpretation of Zen by 鈴木大拙!

頓悟 is possible because the Subconscious Mind can handle unlimited number of pieces of information (Multiple Causes and Effects). Classical Logic is a reasoning process using the Conscious Mind. So they are not compatible.

禪定 in Zen practice is the accessing of Subconscious!

The "whole" is all the causes and effects. So, Zen is also talking about Logic, but not the kind of single cause and effect logic.

Getting 頓悟 through Zen is too far away from normal people (how many people had already getting 頓悟?!) But it doesn't mean that Zen is useless. Zen practice gives normal people a clearer mind. A clearer mind can give normal people a good ground for improvement, development and breakthrough.

Zen also teach us not insisting on everything as everything is 虛妄. Many Zen masters teach us even not to study 公案 as 公案 is condition-based. 公案 is only useful under that single occasion. The condition of that occasion composes of many causes and we can't duplicate all those causes in the current occasion. This is another beautiful illustration of Multiple Causes & Effects nature of Zen. Quoting anything, including someone else's sayings (even though he/she is a guru) is not Zen.

Zen can only studied by oneself, and so no one can give you any advise on Zen, but yourself!

Even though we are not practising Zen, Zen can give us a great insight - there are many causes and effects. To understand something, don't limit ourselves to single cause and effect. Can't you see that this is also one of the NLP basic presupposition!

It is NOT NLP copying Zen. It is just because they are both studying the same thing - Thinking. Again, I am not talking about the Classical Logical Thinking here.

Some final words, both Conscious Thinking and Subsconscious Thinking are "Logical". Rational and Emotional Thinking are also "Logical". There are logics (i.e. causes & effects) in all our thinkings!

真理不是Linear(single cause and effect), 但是邏輯(Logical)的!

Philosophy of Life and Philosophy of Living

Hi,

Can NLP be someone's philosophy of life? No!!!

NLP is just the technique of modeling. How can a technique be a life philosophy!

Furthermore, Traditional NLP just models people's body, mind and their relationship. It lacks the Spirit and Soul elements. It can't be a good philosophy of Life.

Though it can't be a good philosophy of Life, but it can be a philosophy of living. When we can use this technique to model our and others' body, mind and their relationship, we can know how to live better.

But if we can step a bit more "meta", we might be able to use the techique to model the Spirit and Soul Elements. Then, this is no more Traditional NLP. In these few years, I am thinking and researching how we can model these extra elements.

NLP: Definition and Scope of NLP

Hi,

There are always misunderstanding about NLP. Here are some of my opinions:

1. If I can just give only one definition for NLP, I will say: NLP is the modeling of how people thinks.

2. Scope of NLP can include anything about thinking. NLP is just the technique to model people's thinking. Therefore, we can model conscious mind, subconscious mind, unconscious mind and instincts.

We can model Logical Thinking, Emotional Thinking, Volitional Thinking, Responsive Thinking and Conceptual Thinking. We can model beliefs, values, rules, identities and systems. We can also model people's body, mind and their relationship.

81. The more I "know", the less I learn.

82. We are always doing our best. But if it is still not good enough, we need a better way.

83. Getting old is compulsory, but getting wise is not!

84. We are always evolving. But some animal evolve to extinction!

85. We all want to help others, but we can use the wrong ways!

My Birthday Wish

Hi,

A few days later is my birthday!

My career purpose is to help more people to help more people to see more, in return, I can earn my living.

I devoted most of my time in the past few years accomplishing my purpose. But it is still far from being accomplished.

My birthday wish is to think of a better way to achieve my purpose. There must be a better way. I am sure that I will find a better way before my next birthday!

Graduation of NLP Practitioner in Zhong Shan (中山)

Hi,

I returned from Zhong Shan the day before yesterday.

Last weekend was the last module of NLP Practitioner Training, my first NLP Practitioner Program in Zhong Shan (中山) and in Mainland China.

It is only a very small class, but it is a great class.

Congratuation to all of our 7 graduates, 王蔚青、黃志強、黎德緣、方尉明、陳瑞霞、劉魯平、麥梅. Thanks again for your support in the past months. All of them are really smart people. I learned from them as much, or even more than they learned from me!

The best experience with them is that they all asked smart questions. This makes the class very interactive. Their smart questions forced me to think and deliver more.

Lesson Learned: Smart questions are more important than smart answers!

Thanks also to my co-trainer, Thomas. He was doing much more than me.

Systemic Leadership Seminar

Hi,

As mentioned in my previous post, I did the Systemic Leadership Seminar last Saturday. We had around four hundred something people participating the event.

If you missed this event, don't worry, I plan to do it again in the near future. Why? Because I don't think I was doing very good this time.

I regret a bit that I was trying to present something to complex in too short the time. Result: Participants might not be able to grasp the major ideas!

Lesson Learned: Less is sometimes "More"!

When I do it again, I will simplify the ideas. Don't worry again. You will not get less. Remember, less is sometimes more!

Systemic Thinking: Systemic Blindness

Hi,

Answer the following questions, honestly:

1. Do you always find yourself having not enough time?

2. Do you always not know how to do something?

3. Do you always not know the reasons why doing something, but you still do it?

4. Do you always feel worry?

5. Do you always repeat doing the same things days after days?

If "yes" to the above questions (some or all), you might be suffering from the "Systemic Blindness". You are missing something important because you can't see the bigger system.

Solution: Seeing More!!!

This is the topic I am going to cover this afternoon in a new free seminar, Systemic Leadership.

Tell you more after today!

Personal Development: Success = Happiness?!

Hi,

Thanks a lots for all the comments about my last posting on "Success = Happiness?".

Most of you disagrees. I disagree too.

My opinion:

Success = Getting what you think you want. (i.e. it could be your goals, if you have)

If it is what you really want, you will be happy. But what you do might not something you really want!

If what you want is money. Earning money can make you happy. But if you just want what money can bring you, e.g. stability, earning lots of money can't make you happy. You will be happy until you turn the money into stability, like savings in bank. Spending the money will make you even more unhappy. It reduces what you really want - stability!

There is a 2-Steps Process to make your Success = Happiness. Share with you in my next posting.

Personal Development: Balanced Life?

Hi,

Most of us do not have a balanced life. We focused our time and effort in some areas of our lives while ignoring other areas.

There are 2 ways to have a more balanced life.

Firstly, setting goals in various areas. This can be very tedious and difficult.

Secondly, we can have goal covering every areas of our life. Short term goals is quite impossible to do so, but longer term goal can. However, people seldom has long term goal.

The first option is difficult while few people do the second one. That's why most of our lives are not balanced.

I am not a fans of setting goals, but I do have long term goals.

Help or Not Help?

Hi,

Today, one of the Graduate Assistants of the NLP Practitioner Program asked me a good question - How do I decide when to or not to help a participant understanding a particular item during the training?

Sometimes I spend lot of time in helping a participant to understand more, but sometimes I just leave him/her alone. What are my criteria?

1. I help those who are willing to understand and explore. I never help anyone who is not willing to help him/herself. This can be a waste of time.

2. I will also help if the process can be meaningful to most of other participants. I am doing training but not coaching, counselling or therapy to one particular participant. If most of other participants can be benefited from the process, I will do so. Sensible people can learn more from these kinds of interactions than just watching the trainers delivering the planned materials.

Hong Kong's Service Level is Deteriorating!

Hi,

The service level in our city, Hong Kong is deteriorating! Can you believe it?

4 incidents in a week:

1. I visited a CD and Video shop a few days ago. I chose 2 DVDs. A shop staff approached me. I thought that she was trying to help me. But she just asked me to handle her DVDs with care or the plastic package will be broken.

2. I dined at an Italian Restaurant the day before yesterday. The receptionist was so rude that I thought I were back to the 60's. When my soup came, I still had not been given any spoon and forks. When my main course arrived, I even did not had my water served.

3. Yesterday, I had my dinner in a famous Chinese Restaurant. It is a chain-restaurants and I hoped a better service could be expected. But what I found was a cockroach in one of my dishes. I told the waiter and he just said that he would check with the kitchen. No appology! I asked him why he did not appologized for the coackroach. His answer was unbelievable. He told me that it was not his fault. He would check with the kitchen afterwards.

He came back a minute later. He said that the kitchen told him that it was not their problem. The cockroach might get into the dish after it was delivered to our table!

4. I must be having a bad week. I dined at a Japanese Restaurant tonight. After I had almost finished my dinner, I found that there was still one dish missing. I called for help from a waitress. She returned and said that the dish was already recorded in the computer and asked me to wait.

10 minutes later, I requested help from another waiter. He checked and told me the same story. Then, another 10 minutes later, I asked another waitress to check. I requested her to check it seriously as I had already been disappointed by two of her colleagues. She came back and explained to me that the dish was recorded in the computer but there was no such order in the kitchen. She told me that I could cancel the order. Interestingly, there was no appology!

What happened to our city?

Our government can only give us 2 directions for our economy for the future. One is Logistics and another one is Tourism.

Our infra-structures are too expensive for the logistics industry to grow. The only hope seems to be our tourist industry. Can we survive from our competitors in the region with such kind of service level? I am really doubt.

Customer service is something very interesting. Everybody understands it when they are on the receiving side, but not the case when someone is on the giving side.

I had been in the service industry for more than 16 years before I become a coach and trainer. I understand a sercret of great service. If you are also in the service industry (Who is not?! everyone is serving someone else!), you should understand it too.

I will disclose it later.

What is Beauty?

Hi,

Beautiful things(people;-)) attract more!

Then what is beauty?

More than 2,300 years ago, Plato and Aristotle had already given us some insights. They were the great grandfathers of Aesthetics. Here is my consolidated version of their ideas:

1. Proportional. Scale of individual parts is proportional to each others and the whole.

2. Balance. The weight of the overall structure is well-distributed.

3. Consistent. Everything is in line with each others. No sudden surprise!

4. Different. Some differences leads to differentiations and your edge.

These 4 criteria apply to nearly everything. A proportional, balance, consistent life/work with some differences can be very beautiful and attractive!

Learning from Life #71 - #75

Hi,

If we intend to learn something from life, you will find that there are so much to be learned.

Here is another part of my Learning from Life Series:

71. What to do is more important than how to do!

72. Others can't advise you what to do, but they can help you in how to do something.

73. We all can be designer of our business, career, family and life. Use design concepts to think, but not think to design.

74. Live our lives fully and we will be less afraid to die.

75. Before you can be happy, you must make yourself not unhappy first.

NLP: Frames, Communication and Thinking

Hi,

I am doing something completely new in yesterday's NLP Practitioner Business Excellence Module.

I used the whole class to simulate and induce argument, confusion and frustration without anyone knowing in advance.

I do this to illustrate and to make participants aware of one of the core concepts of NLP and Thinking - Frames. I can simply tell you those 14 Frames without doing this simulation. But you will not be aware of their importance. One can easily think that this is just another NLP skills.

My intention is to faciliate at least part of our class to a higher level of awareness when one actually go through the process of argument, confusion and frustration. I think I had done the job as some of our classmates come to me after the class to express their deeper understanding.

Then what is a Frame?

Everybody unconsciously uses his/her own frame to see the world. He /she see only what is inside their frame and then draws his/her conclusion. This is so natural that we normally don't aware of the process.

Frame is Beliefs/Values/Rules/Attitudes that guides our attention and perception. Frames limit our perceptions. We will not see anything outside our frames. When 2 or more people discuss, we all just see what we saw without seeing what others' seeing. Argument is the usual consequence.

But when someone consciously adding more frames to the discussion, we see more through the added frames. I usually do this during our classes so that all the discussion can be happened smoothly. Today, I intentionally not to do so.

When more people express their own views (through their own frames) without adding of new frames, confusion kicks in. If no intervention is initiated, we all frustrated. This happens everyday, everywhere.

This also happens in our heads. We can only see things within our frame. This limited the information which causes confusion and then frustration. We are stuck. Then we give up thinking about that topic.

The best way to be not stuck is having no frame. But this is impossible. Frames reduce the amount of information we need to handle. We can't live without frames. Our Belief/Value/Rule/ Attitude create and shape our frames.

What can we do?

We can unstuck our communication and thinking simply by adding more frames, so that we can see more. Paradox? Yes. If there is no frame, we see everything. But we can't do so. If we have only 1 frame, we see the least. More frames, more we can see!!!

"How will she feel when you do this?" is a frame you can add. But this is not a good frame. It is a Content Frame. It has content (She, Feel, You, Do...). A Content Frame can make us seeing more, but it itself can also delete, distort and generalize our perception.

The 14 Frames I introduced today are Context Frame. They have no or least amount of content. For example, the Outcome Frame - "What is the purpose of doing this?" 'What do you want to achieve by doing this?" or the Contrast Frame - "What are the differences between doing X & Y?"

These frames guide others (in communication) and ourselves (in thinking) to see more in more directions. This is our second way to achieve higher awareness apart from our 6x6 Points of View I mentioned in Module 2 this year.

Many of our GA noticed I had changed the programe quite a lot this year. I had mentioned earlier this year that I will shift the whole NLP Practitioner Program to another level, a level of how we think. I had promised myself that if I can't do so, it's then be the right time for me to stop teaching NLP. If I can't have this breakthrough, it simply tells me that I am too stuck.

BTW, I said earlier in this message that there are 4 core concepts of NLP (Traditional NLP). The 2 apparent ones are Filters and Strategies. the 2 less obvious ones are Frames and Meta-Model.

I will write more about the above four concepts later.

Learning from Life #66 - #70

Hi,

Here is another part of My Learning from Life Series:

66. You can't force anyone doing/thinking something, but you can persuade him/her or create an environment to make him/her do/think that something.

67. Even people ask for something, he/she might not really want it.

68. I am not my job, career or business. I am me.

69. When we have needs unmet, we can't see things clearly.

70. People are different, not bad!

Path to Happiness

Hi,

If you want to be Happy, you can do 2 things. Firstly, don't make yourself Unhappy. Then, make yourself Happy!

You can't be Happy when you are Unhappy. So, if you are Unhappy, don't seek Happpiness. It doesn't works. You must make yourself not Unhappy before getting Happiness. When you are not Unhappy, you are in a Neutral State. It is the starting point to Happiness.

Simple? Yes.

When you like to have something, you are either needing, wanting or desiring for it.

Be clear about what you Need, then get them. This will make you not be Unhappy.

Then focus your effort and time in getting what you Desire. Acquiring them will make you really Happy.

Forget about all your "Wants". They can't make you very Happy or Unhappy!!!

Coaching: Giving Advises

Hi,

When I teach coaching, I always remind our participants not to give advises to clients. When I coach, I always remind myself not to give advises to my clients.

Giving advises causes more problems than solutions.

But I am a human being, and I make mistakes! No matter how careful I try to be, I still give an unwanted advise to my client recently. Actually, it is not an advise, but a small feedback on what I saw.

An unwanted feedback is still an unwanted feedback.

My Learning: Don't even think of giving advises, even being asked for!!!

Where are the Ideas?

Hi,

Today is the Ideas-Lead Econnomy. You generate ideas. You then turn the ideas into products/services. Our business can't be Consumers-Lead. Consumers just do not know what they really want in today's rapid changing world.

But where are the ideas? We thin, we search but we can't find them.

One thing is sure is that the ideas are not in our heads! We just can't think of any great idea out of nothing. Ideas are everywhere around us, but we just can't see them.

Why?

Because they are not in form of words. But we get used only to words. Everything around us are images. We can't see "Non-Words" ideas with a "Word" eyes. We need a different language to see these ideas - the Visual Language or using what I am going to say in my coming classes of the "Business By Design" Program, the Design Language.

See everything around you in form of Point/Line/Face, Shape, Value (Intensity), Texture and Colours. Then you start to "see" the ideas!!!

堅持自己的價值

Hi,

I posted an article - 堅持自己的價值 in the current issue of our Excel Your Life Newsletter. (You can click here to read it)

One of our readers emailed me some questions. Here are my answers:

1. 我覺得在這一個社會裹,市場的眼光根本很難避免。
You are not going to avoid how the market see you. It is more important about how you see your own value. I am not talking about simply seeing yourself with high value. That is either 自欺欺人 or 自大. It is about whether you can see your true value and then enhancing it!

2. 根據你提供的文章(先有了最好的珠寶商的眼光}怎樣才能擁有?
Be a 最好的珠寶商!

3. 若一個心態壞的珠寶商,能從心中看出人生價值嗎?
Value is nothing about attitude. Attitude only affect one's making use of the things/people with value.

4. 文章提到( 我們的價值,不在於外面的評價,而是在我們給自己的定價),自己的定價能單從上學,看書得到嗎?
No. You can NEVER increase your value by studying. By definition: Market Value = Benefits / Price. You can increase your Market Value either by providing more Benefits to Buyer or/and reducing your Price. I do both.

Hope you find these answers useful.

Hypnosis: Extremely Effective Self Hypnosis Suggestion

Hi,

For many years, I am doing self hypnosis for myself everyday. (only 5 minutes a day)

I try to work out some suggestions that are really effective, so that I can use them again and again.

My version is based on the famous Coure's Formula. But I revised it to enhance its effectiveness. This Self Suggestions compose of 3 statements. The first one is the original Coure's Formula:

1. 每一日, 每一方面, 我都會變得越來越好

2. 我會留意自己每一日, 每一方面, 我都會變得越來越好

3. 就算唔好, 我都能夠想到方法令自己變得越來越好

This is a typical example of the Systemic Hypnotherapy that I taught in the Final Retreat of the Master Hypnotherapist Class. For our Master Hypnotherpapist Graduates, you should notice why adding point 2 & 3 can make the original formula becoming more effective.

Point 2 acts as a Positive Reinforcer while Point 3 acts as a Balancer to Point 1.

I do this for years and I do benefited from them. Try them yourself!

Influencing: Set-Up Questions

Hi,

Recently I gave a talk to a large group of sales professionals. I talked about asking questions in selling.

In the good old days, some sales persons invented one of the best selling skills - asking questions. They asked questions not to sell, but to gather information about their potential clients. Then, they used the information to sell. This is a great selling model. You understand your clients better. You know their needs and their hot buttons.

Then some "smart" guys created a even "better" way to ask questions. They invented some questions that can sell the clients directly. No matter what the clients answered, the sales person can use the clients' answers to sell them further.

For example, they can ask their client: Have you heard of the product X? If the answer is "yes", they have a standard script to push the selling process further. If "no", they still have another script to do the same. It can be a series of questions, which finally leads to the closing of the sales.

These are the so-called Set-Up Questions. You set up your clients. If you think that these questions are good, think again.

It could be effective years ago when the skill was firstly created. After years, people are well aware of these questions. They take great care to answer these Set-Up questions in order not to be set-up. This is the biggest reason why clients don't want to answer sales persons' questions.

Our clients are becoming smarter and smarter. Forget about these outdated techniques. Just ask questions to explore more about the clients. My favourite question is: How is your current situation in X? This is an open question without any set-up.

If you ask me what is the follow-up question, there is none. If there is any pre-determined follow-up question, the first question then becomes a Set-Up for your clients. Just ask questions to get more information.

Everybody in the sales profession understands the fact that the more the clients talk, the higher the chance of closing the deal. The only way for a client to talk more is to ask clean questions and to make them feeling safe. Stop using any Set-Up questions!

Hypnosis: Hypnosis is about Changes Part 5

Hi,

This is the Part 5 of the article series of "Hypnosis is about Changes".

To recap what we had discussed in the last 4 parts:

Source > Problems/Factors > Symptoms

This is not the full picture yet. The Source cannot directly produce the Problem. For example, a boy who was frightened by his teacher cannot make him having fear with his boss. The former can be the Source of the latter. But there is a missing link between them. It can be something like this:

Source > Beliefs > Problems/Factors > Symptoms

The Source subsconciosuly induced a/some beliefs, which indirectly lead to the Problem. The boy, after being frightened by his teacher, can believe that all people senior than him can be threatening. This Belief causes the fear.

This opens up another door for hypnotherapists to work on the Problem. We can identify the Belief behind clients' Problem. When they shifted their Beliefs, they improve their Problems.

We can use hypnotic techniques like Inner Guidance, Inner Healer, Communicating with the Disease Entity, Hypnotic Uncovering Technique, or Ego States Therapy to identify the Meaning of the Illness or Problem. When the Meaning and/or Belief is exposed, if it is irrational, the clients can then gain understanding and learning.

We will talk about the last Element, Resultant, in our Part 6.

NLP: More Choices, More Confusion?

Hi,

This is a follow-up message for the previous message of "Problem Solving Models".

My friend emailed me another question which can help us understanding the Choices concept even more. Here is his question:

"The more choices one has, the higher the possibility of getting his/her problems solved. But the more choices one has, the more confusion of managing choices is created."

This is the most frequent question asked about choices!

More choices lead to more confusion? This is a common misunderstanding about "choices".

A Choice is NOT an Option!

A Choice is an Option that one has thought through and understand its advantages and disadvantages, while an Option is just the freedom to choose.

When you have a lot of Options but without the understanding, they will cause confusion. However, more Choices with thorough understanding creates clarity and possibilities!

Find and Create Choices, but not just Options.

Hope this explanation helps.

Problemology: Problem Solving Models

Hi,

I recieved an question from one of our classmates today as follows:

You have suggested two different approaches to solve difficult problem in the WABC Roundtable meetings:

1) 忘記 - 憂慮 - 欠缺 - 挫折 - 忽略 - 危險
2) 症狀 - 理想 - 差異 - 機制 - 解決 - 起因

Do you have any suggestion on how to relate the 2 approaches into an inter-related model for solving problem. Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

Here is my answer and I like to share with you all:

These 2 models are choices for you to choose to solve your problems.

They might not have any relationship. But the more choices one has, the higher the possibility of getting his/her problems solved. One can't solve his/her problems because one might not have enough choicea or have only one single choice but it doesn't works.

In my recent free course, the Life Strategist Program, I presented 50 problem solving strategies. The one message I want to share is: We can have a lots of choices!

BTW, the first model can be easily used in personal problems while the 2nd one can be used in both personal and business situations with ease.

A Simple Way to Make Things Concrete

Hi,

Being human, we can't handle abstract things. Our mind will freezes and we can't respond to it. So we are not very good at ideas and being creative.

Things become more and more abstract today as things change so fast. Anything during changes is abstract until the changes are completed. But when the changes are completed, things start to change again. This is a never-ending story happening again and again today.

So, people suffers.

There is a simple way to make abstract things concrete and solid, so that we can then deal with them.

Name it. Give it a name.

When you give it a name, it changes from nothing to something.

Don't be afraid to give things wrong names. Once you give it a name, you can start to work on it. Then you get more information about it. You can change its name whenever you like.

Name something when you do not know what it is!

Winning & Losing

Hi,

I just watched a TV documentary program. It is about the physiology of winning and losing of human beings.

We all have the instinct to win and to avoid losing. Our lower brain (the animal brain) produces different kinds of chemicals that make us feeling excited and happy when winning and make us feeling miserable and weak when losing.

We hate but remember our losing, all because of these chemicals. This enables human beings becoming so competitive. People withdraws from competitions because they remember too much the bad feelings of being losed. The original intention is to encourage us to learn and remember from our losings so that we can improve in the future.

This is quite "normal" and can be found in most of us. We can't do much, if we are just animals. But we are not.

Our upper brain, the human brain, which is extraordinarily well-developed in human, helps us to think how to win and how to learn from our failures.

But when during competitions and urgency, the chemicals in our lower brain suppress the normal activities of our upper brain. We stop thinking.

Solution: Think and Plan Ahead!

However, this is not our usual habit! If we do not really think and plan ahead, we are just like animals.

Think and Plan Ahead!

Master Hypnotherapist Retreat

Hi,

I had just completed the Master Hypnotherapist Retreat last weekend.

Due to some incidents in my life, I decided to teach all I really know about hypnosis in this retreat. I changed 95% of the course content as compared to last retreat.

I think that I had already done my best to teach everything I can teach. Hoping all those classmates who had come enjoyed and learned.

I myself did enjoyed the weekend very much. Keeping what I think is the most useful to myself with teaching them seems to be a burden to myself. Now, the burden is off my shoulders.

Let me summarised what you had learned in the retreat as the answers to the most important question that every serious hypnotherapist should asked themselves: Why Hypnosis Failed?

1. Not deep enough! Hypnotize your clients to ultra-depth.

2. Not Persuasive Enough! Keep all the 3 major frameworks of Suggestions in mind and do the hard work of practising until you can 語無倫次 out of nothing without thinking. Just remember my demo of "seducing" that old lady and young girl in that 砵仔糕 shop.

3. Not Seeing Enough! See more. See the whole system. This is the only part you need to "think". Remember, a hypnotherapist is an "Active Media". He thinks before interventing.

4. Emotions Block Discovery! Use Painless Therapies as much as possible!

Again, thanks all for your hardwork, participation, and supports.

Hypnosis: Hypnosis is about Changes Part 4

Hi,

This is Part 4 of my article series of "Hypnosis is about Changes".

To recap what we had discussed in the last 3 parts:

Source > Problems/Factors > Symptoms

Every Problem the client facing might have a Source, the initial origin. It can be some unpleasant past experience. The Problem can then produce various Symptoms.

In this Part 4, I am going to talk about the Factors Element.

The Factors are conditions that support the Problem. It can be internal or external. The more intense are the Factors, the more serious can the Problem be.

If we can't work on the Source due to whatever reasons, we can "attack" the Factors. We, hypnotherapists, can help our clients either by making our clients aware of the Factors so that they can do something about them, or by reducing the intensity of their internal factors, or by lowering their reactions to the external factors, or by cutting off the links between the Factors and the Problem.

Usually by doing so, we can reduce the seriousness of the Problem, or sometimes we can eliminate the Problem as the conditions (Factors) is not strong enough to support the Problem any more.

In our Part 5 of the series, we will discuss the Belief Element of the Problem.

Hypnosis: What is the Use of Pre-Talk in Hypnotherapy?

Hi,

Someone asked me a question about Hypnotherapy today.

If we should not do any diagnosis, what is the function of Pre-Talk?

Yes, we should not doing any diagnosis. This is the work of medical doctors/clinical psychologist and other professionals. It is dangerous and misleading to clients as we do not have the right kind of training to do diagnosis.

But we do analysis with the clients. We assist the clients to analyse his/her own situation so that they can be clearer about themeselves and their problems.

So, we ask questions to help them to understand.

Medical doctors ask and answer questions.

Life Strategy, Simple?!

Hi,

I just conducted my "Life Strategist" Free Seminar Series Part 1 earlier this week.

I intended to present a total of 200+ life strategies for you to select for your own life.

Some people might think that the life strategies are so simple, each with just 2 simple words?

What do you expect? A thesis for each strategy!

By definition, a strategy must be simple. If it is complicated, it might be a tactic or just one of the methods.

A strategy is the approach to get what you want in the future. It provides just enough structure to induce your thinking to the suitable tactics and methods.

But it is just too simple and vague. Yes, not everybody gets used to strategy because it is "too" simple and vague. Many seek methods for their whole lives. But they lost sight of the bigger picture. They are so involved into the "doing" part. They are busy for their whole life but can't get what they expected.

Slowly, people lowers their expectation and explains that this is life and reality.

Strategy gives you the bigger picture to see what can be done to achieve what you want. It keeps you focusing what's matter and what's important.

So, you can either get used to the rather simple and vague strategy or continue what you are doing in the past and get what you got in the past.

Wish you successful in your journey of startegy searching!
